Smoke Without Fire

There is Smoke Without Fire.  On Tuesday afternoon (19th August) a plumber from ProTeam soldered a joint on a radiator pipe in a flat in Numa Court.  The heat travelled along the pipe into a wall and caused protective material on the pipe to emit smoke. The smoke was totally contained within the breeze-block wall. Neither the plumber nor the occupants were aware of any smoke.

The smoke eventually escaped on to the top of the balcony of the flat, the fire brigade was called and three fire engines attended.

The firemen removed some bricks from the balcony wall and searched the flat using a heat-detector to find the source of the smoke. They sprayed the wall with water.

The fireman-in-charge told the occupant that "there were no flames".  He also told the occupant not to hesitate to call the fire brigade again - even if he only thought he smelt smoke again that day.

Within moments of the incident, rumours were abounding that it was "an electrical fault", "cowboy workmen" and "cowboy workmen converting a 3-bedroom flat into a two bedrooms."  All are totally untrue.  Source: John Barker

Governance of Brentford Dock Limited

Dear Fellow-Shareholder,

I have been concerned by the lack of good candidates for the position of Board Director. Some constituencies have been un-represented for lengthy periods. There is a lack of good people willing to come forward. In a sense, we get the government we deserve.

There is nothing in the Company's Articles of Association to prevent anyone, however unsuited they may be, from being put forward as a candidate for our Board. Unless there is someone better, and a real election, that candidate is returned unopposed.

I have therefore drafted some proposed changes to the Articles of Association. There are five intentions behind these proposed changes.

The first intention is to widen the pool of potential candidates for the position of Director for a particular Section (i.e. constituency, or Block). If it is someone you know and can respect and communicate with, it shouldn't matter if they live in your Block or in another one.

The second intention is to give the electors for a Block the opportunity to register a vote against a sole candidate. You might prefer no direct representation at all to being represented by someone of whom you have no knowledge or in whom you have no trust.

The third intention is to allow the Board to shrink somewhat, whilst avoiding the possibly contentious issue of re-drawing the electoral boundaries. By enabling up to two sections to elect the same Director (who would then have two votes) the best people may gain more influence, and the lack of candidates will be alleviated.

The fourth intention is to improve the information given to shareholders about candidates prior to an election. They will be required to make a written statement about their competence and policy objectives, and BDL will be required to circulate that statement.

Finally, there will be a formal requirement for the Company to circulate information about potential co-options to the Board, and an opportunity for shareholders to register objections.

If you support these ideas, please subscribe to the resolution and return a completed copy of it to me at the above address.

Yours sincerely,
Anthony Warren

Stolen Coach Causes Thousands of Pounds Worth of Damage

On Saturday evening (10th August) a luxury 52-seater coach was stolen from Armchair's bus depot in Commerce Road and driven to Bournemouth, where it destroyed a pillar at the town hall.

It was chased at high speed along the A31, M27 and M3 by police from the Metropolitan, Dorset, Surrey and Hampshire forces before hitting a car in Isleworth, injuring its two women passengers, and finally crashing into the wall of Syon Park early on Sunday morning.

Eight persons escaped on foot, but four men were later arrested and charged at Feltham Magistrates court on Monday.     Source : Richmond & Twickenham Times.
